One must pass the BPI Exam in order to get the BPI Certification and earn the designation of an energy auditor. There are trade specific exams available for various types of BPI Certifications. However, there is a similarity among all the certifications.
The main focus of the entire BPI exam is on building science fundamentals. In order to check your proficiency in the subject matter of basic certifications, the BPI exam tests your skills and knowledge and relates them to the energy audit performance. Post which, you can master on advanced certifications such as Envelope, Home Inspectors and HVAC Professional.
The candidates must pass a written examination and a practical field examination in order to become a BPI certified professional regardless of any specific designation. This exam is proctored by a BPI Affiliate.
A minimum of 70% marks should be scored by the candidate in order to pass the overall exam. Similarly, an aggregate score of 85% should be attained in combustion safety and carbon monoxide testing modules.
In the written exam, a candidate is provided with 100 multiple choice questions to be answered in two hours of time. The same amount of time is being given during the BPI field exam.
In this exam, the candidate if required to perform a home energy audit which includes setting up and running a blower, worst case combustion safety testing, making prioritized recommendations regarding quality according to BPI standards.
A BPI professional must also recertify their professional education every three years. Thus, you will be able to put yourself on the path to being a successful home energy auditor.
